What is Permaculture?

The word permaculture (permanent + agriculture) was first coined by the movement’s co-founders Bill Mollison and David Holmgren.   It is a solution to developing a permanent ecologically conscious agricultural system that emphasizes maximizing outputs while minimizing external inputs.   The blueprints of these design systems are deeply rooted in the three main ethical principles of permaculture which are (1) Care of the Earth, (2) Care of People, (3) and the Return of Surplus.

“Permaculture is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems.” – Bill Mollison, Permaculture: A Designer’s Manual.
